Hints and Tips

Locate your water main shut off valve/stop tap

In the event of a plumbing emergency, you will need to know where your shut off valve is located. The last thing you need during an emergency pipe leak is to search around your house for the shut off valve. There is already a plumbing emergency, you do not want gallons and gallons of water flooding your home and destroying your property. You may find the main water shut off valve under your sink or in the downstairs cloakroom.

Routinely clean your shower drain

It might look like the creature from the black lagoon, but ignoring it can cause clogged drains. Take the time to clear that hair and debris from the shower.

In winter, cover your outdoor pipes and detach garden hoses to prevent frozen pipes

If the water in your pipes freeze, it can cause the pipe to burst when you are not home or out of town. Therefore, you could come home to a completely flooded house. Taking precautionary measures can save you a lot of money in the long run. No one wants to wake up to a completely flooded house that could have been prevented in the first place. Keep in mind that water expands when it is frozen.

No hot water?

Check your boiler pressure if a combination boiler. It should be between 1-1.5 bar. This can be topped up via the filling loop.

Smell gas?

If you think you have a gas leak or can smell gas, leave the house and phone the National Gas Emergencies number immediately on 0800 111 999. If you're at home, and you can do it safely, turn off your gas supply. The gas mains tap should be beside your gas meter.
